Why does my heater run constantly in winter?

In North Alabama, cold snaps can make your system run longer than usual, but constant running can also point to an issue that’s making the system work harder than it should. The most common culprits we see are restricted airflow (dirty filters, duct issues), thermostat calibration problems, or a system that’s losing efficiency with age. At Air Outlook, we’ll run a full diagnostic, including airflow checks and thermostat calibration, so you’re not guessing at the cause.

How often should I service my heating system?

For most homes, we recommend having a professional evaluate your system twice per year, and ideally before the winter season starts. A twice-a-year approach is recommended because it keeps both heating and cooling in check. Air Outlook offers a maintenance membership for just $180 /yr that includes two yearly tune-ups, so your system gets looked at regularly and small issues can be caught early. Is uneven heating a sign of a problem?

Yes, uneven heating usually means the system is not moving air the way it should. It can be caused by duct leaks, airflow restrictions, thermostat placement, or a system that isn’t sized correctly for your home. Since Air Outlook focuses on tailored sizing and airflow assessments, we look at the full picture, not just the furnace or heat pump itself.

Can a dirty filter cause heating problems?

Absolutely. A dirty filter can choke airflow, which forces the system to run longer and can lead to comfort issues, higher utility bills, and sometimes shutdowns. If the filter is severely clogged, it can contribute to overheating or strain on system components.
